PDA Scholars Deliver

February 8th, 2009

SEEN IN THE CITY
PDA Sholars Deliver
Watching the Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) scholars, Season One’s Irish Fullerton perform with season Two’s Van Roxas and Hansen Nichols last Saturday night, January 10, 2009 at Roberto’s Restaurant in South San Francisco is a welcome pleasurable surprise. Firstly, the place was full to the last seat by mostly younger generation set (they’re very responsive!), despite limited promotions and secondly, by the show’s entertainment value and energy (notwithstanding the fact that the performers are considered beginners here). Irish in person, is as usual, warm and competent, as we have seen her perform and compete on TV numerous times. She’s a fellow Northern Californian to all of us locals and watching her is almost like paying a dutiful requirement. Her hugs are still tighter to us and so is her mom’s. Hansen is now a total package performer as I have observed (thanks to the Academy’s training and Kitchie Molina’s voice techniques). He delivers his spiels and sings comfortably in front of mostly unknown-to-him Fil-Americans (I saw his twin brother and he announced some cousins are in the audience). But the one that ignited the place for me is Van Roxas who has the highest voice quality, the ‘oomph’ factor looks, not-OA-moves, exhibiting his high registers and almost never going flat in his numbers from his soulful rendition of the old song ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ to his almost-crying-in-pain-yet-rocking ‘I’ll Be’ and ‘Another Goodbye Song’. He is surprisingly funny too in person (on and off stage), successfully trying to find humor in anything and articulating it, making it enjoyable to watch and listen to him. Backstage, we also met the group’s mother hen, Mario Colmenares, who is very amiable, yet very professional in his dealings (in his supervision, all the scholars were on time, unlike some of the previous performers at Roberto’s, who will remain nameless here to preserve this column). Again, the Academy has proven its worth in the entertainment industry and we can’t wait for the scholars to be back in their next series of shows this coming May.

Van Roxas

Van Roxas, formerly known as Van Pojas, 5th placer in Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2, is our Hunk of the Week. Van Roxas may not be in the limelight of late but he is slowly carving a niche of his own in the Philippine Entertainment industry. Last month, after embarking on the PDA 6 Concert Tour, Van Roxas guested in Sarah Geronimo’s big concert at the Araneta Coliseum. He also sang the theme song of Komiks Presents: Tiny Tony with John Prats in the title role. Van Roxas is now busy preparing for the launch of his CD lite album this month. Van Roxas is also Hunk Of The Month in the December 2008 issue of Star Studio

Vote for Van in Meteor Garden Remake

December 2nd, 2008

VOTE HERE:

ABS-CBN is cooking another remake, this time it’s the smash hit Taiwanese series Meteor Garden.

http://tagpuan.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/van-pojas-pda2.jpg

Meteor Garden exploded on Philippine television in 2003 via ABS-CBN channel 2. The series became a massive hit in the ratings that’s why it was aired not just once or twice but five times! After its 5th run in the kapamilya network, GMA network acquired the rights to air the same show in their own re-dubbed version. This year, it was aired on tv for the 7th time but now in QTV channel 11.

The stars of Meteor Garden are the Taiwanese boy band called “F4″. They are Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Vanness Wu and Ken Chu. The four asian heartthrobs are very popular not just in Taiwan but also in other countries where Meteor Garden was aired, including the Philippines.

With the tremendous success of the said Taiwanese tv series on Philippine television, a local version is in the works. ABS-CBN is now looking for four young actors who will play the role of Dao Ming Si, Hua Ze Lei, Xi Men and Mei Zuo Ling.

Van Roxas sings ‘tiny tony’ theme

October 18th, 2008

By Roger Serna

IT was a fun-filled Saturday morning when some colleagues and I graced the taping of one of the anniversary episodes of ABS-CBN Cebu’s Kapamilya Winner Ka! It is supposed to be aired on the 25th (I’ll move heaven and earth to watch it). After the entire episode was about to wind up, we heard a commotion from the direction of the dressing room. Minutes later we found out that Pinoy Dream Academy Season II fifth placer Van Roxas was in the house to take part of the show.

Later when we partook of the buffet lunch, we had a chance to get some updates, like Van’s having been chosen to sing the theme song of the new weekly series Tiny Tony with John Prats in the title role.

He’s also going to release a CD lite album next month. His eyes beamed with excitement as he shared the news that he’ll be a guest in Sarah Geronimo’s show on Nov. 8 at the Araneta Coliseum sharing the same stage with other guests with the likes of John Lloyd Cruz and Piolo Pascual.

Oh! He’s climbing up the popularity ladder that fast! He’s got the talent and the looks anyway.

Meanwhile, he’ll be delighting his fans in Dumaguete City on Oct. 22 and his fellow Cebuanos, specifically in Aloguinsan, on the 23rd. Then a month later, he’ll be sharing the limelight with the PDA Top 6 scholars and other PDA scholars Apple Abarquez and couple Chivas and Bunny as part of the PDA tour.

By the way, Van’s handler or manager (whatever!) Mario Colmenares said during that chance meeting that he is now the handler of Chivas and Bunny which will be packaged as a couple in the tradition of Captain and Tenille. Nice.

Mario also said that after the operation which removed a mass in Bunny’s vocal area, the PDA scholar now has a more powerful voice. Good.

During that same meeting, Mario divulged that indeed his former ward, the PDA Season 1 first runner-up Jay-R Siaboc, has gained weight not because of anything else but because of the latter’s better appetite these days.

Despite his obvious added poundage, Jay-R is quite busy. In fact, he’ll be in Sydney, Australia tomorrow for a concert with PDA Season 1 star dreamer Yeng Constantino and young singer Makisig Morales.

Jay-R will be in Lapu-Lapu City on its fiesta celebration next month for a show with Apple Abarquez and his former band, Scrambled Eggs.

Mario’s efforts to devote more time to his wards are starting to pay off as they have their hands full of commitments. No wonder, Mario is all smiles these days! Good for you!
